You’re raising funds: take off your shoes!

What’s really going on when you motivate donors to give? According to the Veritus Group blog, something deeply spiritual happens. Read The Spirituality of Major Gift Fundraising.

The post is about major donor fundraising. But the spirituality of fundraising and giving is no different for any kind of fundraising from any kind of donor. With major donors, you get to watch it happen in person. For the rest of us, you just have to believe it’s real:

People need to give. It’s in our DNA. We will die inside if we don’t give of ourselves.

[Fundraising] also transforms the life of the … fundraiser. It’s at that point … that this mystical, spiritual moment happens. It’s incredibly powerful.

In many faith traditions, you remove your shoes in the presence of something holy. Doing so keeps you mindful that you’re in a separate kind of space than you are the rest of the time. Sometimes I think we should be required to take off our shoes when we’re doing fundraising. That’s how powerful our work is.

When you’re aware of the spiritual power of giving, you can hardly help but be more donor-focused and relevant.
