6 ways to help your board members become fundraising superstars

Does your board understand fundraising?

They should.

But they probably don’t. Why would they? Most of them have jobs doing other things.

You need to lead them to understanding fundraising. When you do that, you will reap amazing rewards. They’ll be better at finding and raising funds. They’ll give more themselves. And they’ll do a lot less destructive micromanaging!

Here are Six Things Your Board Needs to Know about Fundraising from the GuideStar Blog:

  1. Fundraising isn’t complicated. If you know how to have any kind of human relationship, you’re well equipped to raise funds.
  2. Fundraising isn’t begging. It’s partnership. Begging doesn’t work very well!
  3. There’s plenty of money to go around. A lot of other charities are asking your donors, but they aren’t locking you out!
  4. Before asking others, give money yourself. You need to participate in the miracle of philanthropy to really get it.
  5. Asking in person is best. You might find it intimidating, but asking face to face is much more effective than any other way.
  6. Show gratitude in a thoughtful way. True fundraising includes thanking. You need to be just as good at that as at asking.
