How you know when you’re really connecting with donors

If you’ve never been involved in major donor fundraising, this post at MarketSmart, may surprise you: I’ve never told anyone this before

Good major donor people hear this statement regularly from their donors:

…if we’re doing our jobs well, we’re creating spaces where people can share. It’s rare that people get asked thoughtful questions about their life, childhood, values, and dreams.

Because that’s how you succeed at major donor fundraising. You connect meaningfully with people. And they end up tell you amazing things about themselves.

If you work in an area of fundraising like direct mail or digital, you might rarely meet a donor face-to-face and get that kind of connection.

But you need the same mindset: Curiosity. Openness. Kindness.

That will make everything you do better.

So ask yourself: Is your approach to donors all about how amazing your organization is … or is it about connecting in a meaningful way with the people who help make it possible?

And the future? It’s already here. More.
