It’s scary, no doubt about it. The Trump administration wants to undermine or even destroy nonprofits they don’t like. Starting with Harvard. Possibly including environmental and climate organizations, nature groups, civil rights, public broadcasting, organizations focused on DEI, and more.
Some of these things are empty threats or rumors. Others are real. If you are in or near these “target” categories, keep your eyes open.
And follow this amazing playbook from The Agitator, at Trump and the Sistine Chapel Playbook:
Lean in. Do not tiptoe. Do not self-censor. Do not start sanitizing your mission statements into pablum to avoid scrutiny. You cannot appease someone who sees your very existence as defiance.
Trump may be handing you a bonanza that can transform your revenue stream.
Here are Roger Craver’s rules for “leaning in”:
- Tell the truth. Even if it stings. Especially if it stings.
- Make it visual.
- Name names. Don’t euphemism “powerful interests.” Call out the would-be autocrats with enough gall to flood a canyon — or save democracy.
- Ask boldly. People want to give when they feel something’s at stake.
- If they come for you, say thank you.
We don’t know what’s coming next.
But we do know that boldness will serve you far better than fear. Your donors want to make a difference. They will be there for you because they need to fight back in a meaningful way.
But if you’re hiding in a bunker, they won’t.
