Monthly donors just set it and forget it, right.
Maybe not so much.
It turns out monthly donors, like other donors, are more likely to stick around if you let them know they make a difference, according to the MasterWorks blog, at Why Monthly Donors Cancel … and How to Keep Them.
Here’s what they found:
The biggest time for monthly giving cancellation is right after month 1. But beyond that, the whole first year is when retention is worst for monthly donors.
To cut back on those first-year cancellations, a few things made a meaningful difference:
- Thank-you postcards at Month 9: 10% decrease in cancellations over the next year.
- Branded newsletters, tailored specifically for monthly donors: 7% decrease in cancellations.
- Ringless voicemails at 3, 6, and 9 months: 4% decrease in cancellations.
Relationships matter. Including for monthly donors.
Let them know their monthly giving makes a difference.
